\"SPACE\"<\/a>Each spring in Columbus there is a book fair called SPACE<\/a>, the Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo.\u00a0 After years of thinking about going, I finally got there.\u00a0 Approximately 150 artists were set up at tables selling their wares.\u00a0 It’s a tricky show to navigate, in part because the sea of people is so varied:\u00a0 old guys in Spider-Man shirts, young Goths with piercings, awkward nerds, chickens, quiet artists.\u00a0 The work reflects this broad spectrum, too.<\/p>\n

There were a few familiar people\/works:\u00a0 Cleveland’s own Derf Backderf<\/a>, Matt Kish<\/a>, Matt Dembicki<\/a>, a better introduction to Joseph Remnant<\/a>, who illustrated Harvey Pekar’s posthumous Cleveland<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 And of course some new finds, which is why you go to a show like this.\u00a0 Here is a brief introduction to my two favorite finds from the show.<\/p>\n

\"Homesick\"<\/a> Jason Walz<\/a> has written a haunting tribute to his mother, and the struggles of finding purpose and courage in beginning his own marriage.\u00a0 Homesick<\/strong><\/em> is a beautiful graphic novel published by Tinto Press<\/a> (publisher’s rep is originally from NE Ohio), and has been recently sold to DC Comics.\u00a0 Watch this one.<\/p>\n

\"In<\/a> Marnie Galloway<\/a> is from Texas, currently residing in Chicago.\u00a0 She’s written a couple comic collections, but her new work is a gorgeous novel in woodcuts, a la Lynd Ward.\u00a0 Volume I is named In the Sounds and Seas<\/strong><\/em>, where sounds and dreams materialize and take on personality and meaning of their own.\u00a0 She is self-published through her own Monkey-Rope Press, and has recently won a Xeric Foundation<\/a> grant.\u00a0 I’m eager to see Volume II!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
