Newbery MedalThe Newbery Medal was established in 1922 and is presented annually by the Ameican Library Association to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.  It has been the standard of excellence for children's books and is well respected by librarians, teachers, parents, collectors, and of course, children.  As a collection, Newbery winners are an impressive history of publishing, illustration, story, and social climate of the times. Perhaps this is why they are so collectible as a group, and why the first editions remain among the most-sought after of all children's books.  Due to lasting popularity, many titles remain in print as well.  In addition to the Newbery Medal, one or more Newbery Honors are also awarded each year.  Here is the list of winners.
