Book Trade FAQs

What We Buy

We buy books in almost any genre or age, but we are super picky about condition. We prefer scholarly or niche fields rather than general surveys or introductions (please note we do not buy textbooks). We are particularly interested in vintage children’s books, literary classics, genre fiction, recent Indie bestsellers, philosophy, artist monographs, and nonfiction classics in their fields. We also buy first editions, leatherbound, collectible and rare books, and even some ephemera.

What We Don’t Buy

We do not buy textbooks, magazines, Readers Digest, book club series (ie, Time-Life), encyclopedias, or TV tie-ins. We do not buy non-book items like records (LPs), cassettes, CDs, VHS, DVDs, etc.

We do not buy yesterday’s forgotten trends (this ranges from Booth Tarkington to Robert James Waller), and we limit our buying on recent trends (ie, James Patterson, Mitch Albom). We do not buy dated materials like travel guides, computer manuals, or many how-to guides. We do not buy exhibition or auction catalogs, erotica, or political exposes.

We prefer hardcover books to have their original dust jackets, and will not buy incomplete sets (even if they’re pretty). We limit our quantity of mass market paperbacks (esp. nonfiction, romance, pop fiction). We do not buy ex-library books or book club editions.

Condition counts. We do not buy highlighted, underlined, crayoned, unhinged, falling apart, missing pages, smoky, fire-damaged, musty or mildewed books. We have sharp noses for mold!

Permission to Bring in Books for Trade

We do not make specific time-slot appointments, but we would like to know you’re coming. Please call 216-795-9800 to have your books preliminarily vetted, and to be approved to bring in your books during a given week. Anytime for drop-off is fine (we’re open Tues-Sat 10am-6pm). There’s a form to fill out once you’re here (your contact info), and we ask that you leave the books here for us to look at when we have time. We’ll call you within 7 days to discuss our offer. Unlike pre-pandemic times, we ask that you do not linger waiting for us to assess your books, but allow us to call you later. Because we need to control the quantity of books we look at each week, we limit each person to 4 boxes per drop-off.

What We Pay

We give you a choice between cash or credit – with the store credit being 20% greater than the cash offer (I think we're the only bookseller in NE Ohio who offers cash for used books). Keep in mind that most used books are sold at half the original cover price, and so we’re offering you considerably less than that. Any cash offer over $10 will be rendered as a check; store credit expires in one year. Rare books are assessed on a per-book basis, with current marketplace supply/demand, condition, and regional interest kept in mind. Condition is always a consideration. Please note, since we’re making an offer on your books, we cannot make appraisals.

Payment Pick-Up

We will email or telephone you with an offer within 7 days. Please accept or reject the offer promptly, so we can begin processing your books. You may come claim your payment (store credit or check), along with anything we did not purchase, within 7 days. You must remove any unpurchased items, we cannot dispose of them for you.

Thank you for trading your used books at Loganberry Books! It’s always time to find new books!
