Seeking time travel SciFi book where one of the destinations the character visits when testing the time machine he decides to call "Earth without a J" because he saw his garage, but the Junk Jar was now labeled "Unk Ar" and everything else was the same. Thank you!
I think that is “The Number of the Beast” by Robert A. Heinlein.
Scene from Number of the Beast : “Didn’t Pop tell you? We made one minimum translation. We didn’t seem to have gone anywhere and Pop thought he had failed. Until I tried to look up a number in the phone book. No ‘J’ in the book. No ‘J’ in the Britannica. No ‘J’ in any dictionary.”
Excerpt From: The Number of the Beast. “The Number of the Beast Robert A. Heinlein.”
Excellent! Thank you! I found the full part I remember (or actually mis-remembered) just a bit later in the book where they saw bins that were marked with a capital “i” instead of a J – so Junk Metal became Iunk Metal. A cupboard that should have been labeled Jugs & Jars was labeled Iugs & Iars. I combined it all into remembering it as Unk Ar.
Thank you!!!
