140B: A Yukon Adventure (solved)

I am trying to locate a book for a friend.  The title is not known and it was probably published in the late1940’s or early 1950’s.  Some Disney friends went looking for gold in the Yukon and ran into Peg-Leg Pete.  While trying to escape him one of the friends shook hands with a totem pole and a trap door opened up to save them from Peg-Leg.

Does your friend remember which Disney characters were involved? There was an early Disney cartoon called The Klondike Kid (1932) that starred Mickey, Minnie, and Peg-Leg-Pete. That may have been adapted to a book later.

Scrooge McDuck allegedly acquired his fortune in the Yukon, so many of the old Scrooge comics were set in that location. I don’t know if Pete was involved in any of those.

There was also a mini-comic called Donald Duck, Klondike Kid printed in 1950 as a promotional item for Wheaties cereal.

None of these sound exactly like what you’re looking for, but perhaps Disney later released an actual book based on one of them?

Well, she thinks that the 2 main characters were Goofy and Peg-Leg Pete. I looked into “The Klondike Kid” and the Wheaties comics and they aren’t what she’s looking for. Thanks for your input, though. I’ll keep searching !

I FOUND IT !!! The title is Donald Duck and the Hidden Gold. It was a Sandpiper book published in 1951 and featured Donald Duck and Peg-Leg Pete . I found one for sale on Amazon.com. My friend is going to get a really nice Christmas gift this year !
