Looking for a children’s book I had in the 1970s/80s about two neighbors who begin competing to have the best garden. It’s very beautifully illustrated and their gardens grow bigger and more elaborate until eventually I think they grow together. It is possible they are forced to become friends and cooperate at that point, but I don’t recall very well.

178B: Birthday girl who gets a glockenspiel
My sister and I have been always on the lookout for a book that was hers and then mine which was about a birthday girl waking up on her birthday and with a bluebird on her windowsill I believe and the story follows her day. She receives a glockenspiel as a gift.
It’s possibly a Golden Book or Wonder Book and she would have had it in the late 1950’s.
178A: Cool Cars from 40’s or 50’s
As a child I was gifted a hard cover picture book, written in the late 40’s or 50’s. It contained wonderful pencil-drawn illustrations of sleek and aerodynamic autos of that era. They were drawn from the perspective of a child viewing from a sidewalk in a busy city. I do not recall the name of the book, or even the story, but I have vivid memories of the drawings.
177C: Old Man in a Tub, a Cat and a Mouse peeking in hole in wall
I am looking for a children book I had in my childhood all I remember is that there was a peeking mouse on a hole on a wall, an old man, a cat and a bathtub. The old man was in the bathtub. The art was amazing almost vector style. I was maybe 5 or 4 when I had this book I wish I remember its title I know it was vintage between 1960 to maybe 1978 I had this book in the 80s.
176G: Boy’s toy soldiers come to life
I would check this book out of the library when I was in elementary school. I would put the time period between 1990-1995. The book in question is an illustrated children’s book about a boy whose toys either come to life for real or in a dream. They are mostly toy soldiers and in the book are wonderful two page color illustrations of these scenes with the toys. I remember one scene is in a bath tub with a toy boat battle. I don’t think the book was any older than the eighties but I obviously could be mistaken.
176F: Mister Donutn (solved)
I am trying to find a large format picture book that was my son’s favorite. He checked it out of the school library multiple times so it was likely published from the early to mid 1980’s. I believe the title was something like “Mister Donut” and every page had extremely detailed drawings in black and white of all sorts of doughnuts with special things to find on each page (sort of like an early “Where’s Waldo”).
174F: magical flying princess turns king & queen into Giants
My query is a bit different than the usual… I own 6 original illustrations from a children’s story but do not know the book title, author or illustrator. I am seeking information on the book title. Description – A little princess is in her bedroom and the Queen bursts in holding a clock that is set at 9:45 she wants her to go to sleep. The Princess acquires magical powers, can fly above the castle balanced on the courtiers and animals and causes the King + Queen to grow so big that they can no longer fit in the house. Now huge, they stare through the kitchen window while she enjoys herself with the chef. Girl wears purple, has a shaggy dog and a Knight and Wizard also seems to be part of the story line. Based on the illustration style and details I would date this edition to the 1967 -1971.
thank you
174B: Teddy bear picture book in the sea (solved)
I’m looking for a picture book about a teddy bear named “Jacques” that falls out of a boat into the ocean along with some other stuffed animals (a white sheep?). He sees mermaids and an octopus squirts him with ink. He eats “fish fingers”. It’s most likely English and I had it when I was about 4 or 5 back in ’89 or there about. The book had very interesting full page illustrations.
It’s been bothering my sisters and me for decades!
173C: Cow wearing Galoshes
When I was a child, my mother bought me a book from the University of South Florida’s St. Pete campus. It was by a USF graduate. This would have been in the very late 70’s or early 80’s. I would say between 1979 and no later than 1985. I remember it being read to me before I started 1st grade. Many people try to convince me it was Ferdinand the bull, but from what I see of it, this is not the right book.
It was about a cow who wore galoshes. I believe they were red. I
The cover of the book was yellow.
173A: Lost Book Mother Learned to Paint From (solved)
I’m looking for a book my mother had as a child. I think you would call it an coloured Illustration book with animals all dressed up. Some with babies and some not. My mother was born in the 1920’s So not even sure how to find it without a name. My mother loved this book and later in life she became a painter. She painted from the book an elephant that was dressed with a mouse and the elephant is jumping because of the mouse. Also a possum with her babies. I have one painting I will send you from the book. My father out lived 2 wives and was on his 3th wife when he passed so my mother’s book got lost. I remember how she loved this book and would love to find it.
