150J: jokes/quotes to escape from a shell, selecting future selves (solved)

Looking for a children’s book, brother and sister, a series of magical challenges.  One requires that they escape from a conch shell with increasingly important quotes.  They start with jokes/riddles and end up needing powerful quotes for the final sections of the shell.

Also there is a scene where the sister (Nora maybe? Ellie?) is faced with a series of doors, each in a set of two where she chooses one based on her reflection.  At first she chooses more sophisticated versions, with fewer of her hated freckles, but ends up very uptight and opts to return and take another path.

150I: Nine ??? Dragons (solved)

Children’s book I read to my kids in the 80’s.  I believe it was part of a collection, my daughter believes it may be from Sesame Street.  Probably a learning book about numbers.  “Dragons” was definitely in the title, probably with a descriptive word in the middle, such as “Nine Daring Dragons”.

149F: Kitten on wrong side of door

My grandparents had a children’s book about a kitten that was always on the wrong side of the door – the title may have been something like that.  It was a small book, maybe 4″ x 6″ inches, with a light blue cover and an oval in the center with a picture of a little girl and/or the kitten on a front step.  I think the kitten was black and white.  It would have been in the early ’70s that they had it, but I have no idea how old it was.  I don’t remember it looking too old at that time.

149B: Caroline and her Friends (solved)

I had a children’s (picture) book in the 60’s called something like “Caroline and her Friends.” Caroline was a little girl but her friends were all animals. They traveled around the world. I don’t remember much text, but the illustrations were marvelous and detailed, sometimes a 2-page spread, in which each animal friend was doing something that fit their nature: being scared or brave etc. There was a storyline of being castaway after their ship sank, they built a raft, ended up in India where they helped a prince regain his kingdom (he’s trapped in a pit with a tiger when they first find him, I think).  There may have been two books in a series. At the end of one, they return to Caroline’s house and do spring cleaning. At the end of another, they are in a ski resort, one of the animals breaks a leg and has to stay inside. I may not actually have the name Caroline right. My mother threw this book away when it got moldy in the attic and I’ve longed to see it again for years.
