A teen boy/girl is taken from home by the government and put on a spaceship. There is only a snarky robot and a caged feral girl (maybe an alien?) onboard. They try to escape via bedsheet rope. The cover is them climbing down the rope. Publish range of 1950–2000. NOT “Have Spacesuit, Will Travel.”

I’m looking for a YA sci fi book, maybe from the 70s or 80s, about a girl who lives in an orphanage/juvy work camp type place. She has the ability to move thru (time/space/another dimension?). There is a scary, mysterious maintenance man that works at the orphanage who turns out to be a boy shares her same ability, but tried it with his pet dog and somehow they merged beings. She befriends him and tries to help him and ultimately is able to un-merge them, and they have an romantic attraction. There is also an old lady that lives in a mansion near the orphanage who all the orphans go to meet. In the end it turns out the old lady is actually the girl’s grandmother who has been looking for her for years.
Science fiction book where most young people make “coming of age” trips to various planets. A young woman delays making her trip to different worlds but finally does when all of her friends have already left. Book wasn’t risque, but her parents bought her a “sex magnifier” as a graduation gift.
I’m looking for a sci-fi storybook, probably from the early ’80s. I remember it as similar in tone to The Black Hole, but that’s definitely not it.
The only scene that sticks out is that at the end, someone is tied up with energy whips or ropes that looked like curved lightsabers.
I read this in the late 80’s / early 90’s. A girl discovers that her friends are using a cube like device that when activated sends them on adventures. The only adventure I remember is all of them being shrunk and swimming in a pool of spilled soda. But with each use, they lose more of their knowledge and start using other words because they can’t remember the actual one-in one case saying “Hitchcock” instead of ketchup. The girl finds out through her dreams(?) that the device has been sent from another world by a queen who’s already drained all of her subjects of all their knowledge. I remember the cover was mainly black with the girl looking into a light.
I am looking for a YA sci-fi/fantasy book I read when I was a kid. I believe it came out in hardcover in the US in or around 1988. It was about 12 boys sent to a military/reform school, I think the school was called Kah Nagallah or something like that. I seem to remember that the story was told from the POV of a boy who was being sent to the school with his adopted brother, who was autistic. The faculty secretly trained the boys to go on a mission to a subterranean kingdom to retrieve a powerful object, I think it was called the Vroon. The boys started calling themselves ‘the Coyotes’ and their symbol was a nautilus shell with an arrow through it. The boys escape the control of the faculty and recover the Vroon for themselves and use it for good.
The book was long, over 300 pages I think. It had some b&w illustrations. The cover art was a drawing of the boys riding in a tracked vehicle with a dome through a cavern.
This book was published in about 1973 and I think it came from Scholastic. It was called something like “The Power of Three” (there are a few books called that on Amazon, but it’s none of those). Three Welsh(?) teens discover that they are psychic, and worry that they have caused a plane crash.
I think this book stumper may be one of the harder ones. I’ve been trying to help my friend find this one and we’ve gone ALL over the Internet to every single site that does this sort of thing and NO ONE has the slightest idea of what the book is. SO, if you guys can figure it out we’d both be eternally grateful!! 🙂
What is Remembered About it:
the name of the planet translated to “Tawny” if I remember. that was also the colour of the eyes of all natives there. the woman who was transported
to the planet had different coloured eyes.
I remember that she became a “priestess’ due to the fact she had more than
one child with her husband back on Earth. as well as due to her transport.
she had special abilities. abilities these males in a bad area wanted to
stop. because they wanted the natives to stop breeding.

(3) It is *not* part of a series – it is a stand alone book
(4) I have a vague recollection of the word “Karin” or “Kirin” or “Kyrin”
or something like that in the title or possibly the name of the main
character or the planet. But, searches on these words have been fruitless.
(5) The opening of the book is set in “modern” times – i.e. 20th century.
(6) The main character is a 30-something year old woman who is out jogging
and gets transported to another world through a vortex. She finds herself
as a pseudo servant on this planet. Character ‘falls’ for overlord of
manor. The book sounds like a corny sci-fi romance, but it is not a
‘bodice
ripper’. [I recall a scene in a horse paddock where the
‘overseer/overlord’
is trying to capture her. She is still wearing her jogging shoes and she
is
able to evade him because her running skills are superior to the other
captives. Another scene I remember takes place in a sauna. Another woman
reaches out and touches the main character’s c-section scar. A spark leaps
between them and the other woman is able to get pregnant. In another scene
she is back on a starship and finds out that she was kidnapped illegally
and that there is no way for her to get back to earth as too much time has
now passed there and her family is long gone

Picture book, for ages ~6-10? I read it at least 20 yrs ago. Fantasy/sci fi. Girl lives in oppressive tribe in desert world. She runs away, crosses desert, almost dies. She has pet with her. Eventually she reaches another civilization. Colors red and green (or blue?) played major role in story.
I found this book at the library in 1985, it may have been published in the 70s. I believe it was young teen science fiction, it had a long title that included the word “Twinkie” (possibly plural). Central character was a girl.
