246A: A teen suffers from low self-esteem

It was a paperback from 1970s about a teen, perhaps named April, who lacks self-esteem and then loses weight. I thought is was called April in the Mirror but cannot find a book with this title. It was probably a scholastic book.

I think I read that book too and that it was my cousin’s book. I will be seeing her over the holidays and will ask her about it. I think the name April is correct but of course I don’t know for sure. HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Nancy

Maybe “In a Mirror” by Mary Stolz?

Til Carey and Bessie Muller were roommates. They seemed as different as two people could be. Til was lithe and beautiful and usually had a dozen boys chasing her. And Bessie–well, Bessie had a problem she refused to face. She was fat and missed out on a lot because of it. On weekends she stays in and did what she was best at, writing. It was only when she began to get critical of those around her that her friendship with Til nearly ended. Then Bessie realized it was time to take a good look at her own life and her own problems.

Possibly Mirror Image by Barbara Bartholomew? Chubby twin spends summer working on her aunt’s farm one summer, helps a boy train a horse and, in the process, loses weight.

“Tired of tagging along after her popular twin sister, sixteen-year-old Brooke spends the summer at her aunt’s farm in Oklahoma. There she meets Brett and his wild filly Susie. Will this summer be special for Brooke?”

I believe this was called “Girl in the Mirror”. The girl’s father remarries a thin woman then dies, leaving the girl in the care of her stepmother who, it turns out, had once been overweight and who helps her to lose weight. I don’t think Betty Cavanna wrote it, but it was her type of book.

Look at “Girl in the Mirror” by Zoa Sherburne. Protagonist’s name is Ruth Ann, not April, but the story line sounds right.

Sounds like “That Crazy April.” She was overweight and always baked cookies for her friend Davy. He was ultra conservative and was going to go off to prep school and didn’t like Women’s Lib. Cress also had a gorgeous friend who was going to be in a wedding fashion show, and Cress got to be in it too — as a fat little boy ring bearer (humiliating). I think she loses weight, gains self-esteem, and stops making cookies for chauvanistic Davy!
