1940/1950 Possibly a Jr. Elf book. It was a small children’s book about cats on South Sea (?) island, kittens went to island, one (or more) cats wore a crown of pearls at the end.

Nine Lives of Island Mackenzie by Ursula Moray Williams?
Mackenzie the cat manages to sustain life while sharing an island refuge with Miss Mary Petiffer, who dislikes cats.
I was too young to read, so I don’t know the title. It seems to have been around 1958 or 59, and I just remember the pictures. Those little Jr. Elf books sometimes had black and white pictures mixed with color pictures. And about the only picture I remember was the one near the end where the cat had on a crown of champagne colored pearls (like a strand of pearls just wound around up into a crown on top of the cat’s head.) I don’t think there were any real people in the story. But thanks for trying. I really appreciate any response because I want to see that book again in my lifetime.
The Owl and the Pussycat?
I think this is Captain Kitty. My copy is a Rand McNally Storytime Book but there is a Jr Elf version as well.
I agree with the above poster about Captain Kitty. Sounds exactly like what you’ve described!
