198C: The Changeling (I think).

I read this book in the 70s. It was a chapter book. I’m a little vague on the plot, but I think a few kids get sent away to the country (might have been England wartime a la Lion Witch and Wardrobe). They go outside, and they are in a different world. There are SO many books named Changeling that I’ve been unable to find it. It is NOT the Snyder book.

Maybe Steel Magic (Gray Magic) by Andre Norton. The children are in the country and go on an adventure in another land.

Sara Lowry and her brothers Eric and Greg go on a picnic on their uncle’s property and discover a secret hidden gate that transports them to the enchanted land of Avalon. They meet Huon of Bordeaux who explains the three magical objects, Merlin’s ring, Huon’s horn and Arthur Pendragon’s sword Excalibur have all been stolen. They ask the kids to find them as they, being totally human, can handle “Cold Iron” or in this case Stainless Steel utensils from their picnic basket. They split up and each goes after one of the objects. They have all kinds of magical adventures which help each child overcome his or her fears and rise to the challenges of the quests.

Nope–Not the Andre Norton. I did read and love Steel (Grey) Magic, but it wasn’t the Changeling. I think in the book I’m looking for, it’s a different world right out their front door, they don’t go anywhere.
