Historical romance from 1980’s or early 1990’s. Colonial America farm. Woman married to crippled man who died in fire along with son. Farm taken over by British troops. Imprisoned and new man got her out and married her. They had twins. She killed a friend who attacked her.
In the mid-80’s I bought a collection of tiny picture books for my nephew which featured anthropomorphized animals who lived on Cobblestone Lane. I bought them because the first book feature a character (a cat) named Tim, like my nephew. I am looking for these books again as Tim now has a son and would like him to have a set. Can you clue me in as to what they were?
I am looking for a book I bought at school thru the Scholastic Book Club, 1982-1986.
The author was 18 and had written a short story that won a contest. The book I bought was the longer version of that story written after the contest, althou it was only around 120 pages I believe.
The story was about a misfit high school boy who made models of gargoyle-like creatures that were about 3 feet tall and for some reason they came to life. The cover was of the boy in his living room and in the background on the stairs was a set of gargoyle legs coming to get him.
I called Scholastic a few years ago to ask about contest winners as I thought it would be the
easiest way to find a name but they referred me to their Canadian office and they never got back to me.

I don’t remember the title or author. Hardcover book, maybe light yellow. Printed in 1970s or 1980’s. No later than 1988. It had different plays kids could act out. I think it included prop lists with each little play. Cover maybe had a stage with kids.
The book is a large, blue cloth covered, fully illustrated book similar to the Waldo books. It was about a caveman with orange hair who traveled through different eras of history – wild west, Rome, Egypt, with large, detailed illustrations of people, activities and buildings. Late 80s.
A young adult (or middle reader?) book published sometime in the 1980’s about a boy who escapes from a New York City field trip and spends the day charmingly conning New Yorkers out of their money. The cover may show the boy dressed in a tuxedo, surrounded by a captivated street-corner audience.
Bought this around 1986 (6th grade book fair!) and cannot remember the title or main character names. Loved the story though, and hope I can find it for my daughter.
The hardback cover was green, and the picture was of three girls singing and stirring a fourth girl in a pot.
The story was of a girl in her early teens at summer camp. She ends up feeling saddled with another girl who is strange and a little disgusting – the weird girl borrows a barrette from the main character and uses it to clean her toenails.
There is a talent show (depicted in the cover art), and the weird girl is the one in the pot.
The main character ends up tossing the weird girl out of a canoe, and leaves her bobbing in the lake. She tries to make up with her before they leave camp, but the weird girl yells at her in the cafeteria.
The main character goes home regretting what she did, and tries to think of some way to make amends.
This is a book that my mom read to me when I was a little girl in the late 80’s, early 90’s. I think it was called something like “Mrs. ______’s Cake Shop” (or possible Bake Shop) although I’m not sure and haven’t found anything by searching with those keywords.
I remember that it was about a lady who had a cake shop with all different kinds of cakes. The illustrations were really cute and it talked about how she made big cakes, and little cakes, and short cakes, and tall cakes….The illustrations showed cakes of all colors and sizes sitting on different platters. Some cakes had frosting and were very fancy, others had no frosting. Some were little like cupcakes and had pink frosting (I think) with cherries on them.
I think the story continued with her boxing up a cake, or several cakes, that she was going to deliver somewhere. As she is walking along with her cakes, it starts to rain. I think she didn’t bring her umbrella with her because she was holding all the cakes, or there is something about her umbrella in the story, but I’m not sure if its a main part of the story or not.
And that’s all I can remember!
This was one of my favorite books as a little girl and I can still remember the illustrations of all the little cakes in my mind but I just can’t seem to remember the title or how the rest of the story goes.
I don’t remember the title, but I think it may have been from Scholastic. I want to say in the 1980-1983 range.
I do remember the very first story was called “Hugh” and it was the classic hitchhiker story, and in this case Hugh the ghost saves the driver (if I’m not mistaken) from an accident.
