325K: Giant Baby Studied By Scientist In Warehouse

All I had was a memory of reading about a giant infant brought to a warehouse, where a man studied him.  L158 “Large Child Playing With Real Cars” indicated the story was from a 1950’s or 1960’s elementary school reader, which seems right–the book was from the library back when I was 8 or 9 in the early 60’s.  It mentions the warehouse, which I remember, the man, which I do recall must have been a scientist, but other than this I’m completely drawing a blank.

Thanks for any help you can give,

324Z: Sports Car Race With Dirty Oil

When I was a kid in the 1950’s, I read a series of ‘car books’ about a young man who became interested in sports car racing.  I remember that the name of the car manufacturer was ‘black’ something and as an advertising promotion, they once drove one of the cars many, many miles (20,000+?) without an oil change, and then entered the car in a sports car race.

Any of this sound familiar to anyone?

324S: Haunted House Mystery; Culprit Is A Pet Frog

This was a book on cassette – it may have had an accompanying read along book.  I checked it out from the library all the time in the mid to late 90’s.

There was a group of kid detectives who were asked in to investigate strange noises in an old house and prove it wasn’t haunted. There was a sick, bedridden boy visiting the owner of the house. After investigating, the detectives found that the sick boy had a secret pet frog that was causing the spooky sounds. The sick boy might have been visiting from a different country.

324N: Girl Camping In A Treehouse

Looking for a book - not sure if it’s a novel or short story - about a young girl spending time, possibly during summer break, in the woods. She’s pre-teen or teen, and with the permission of her family is living either in a tent or a treehouse out in the country, perhaps right on her family’s property. I don’t remember much else except 1) her eating roasted grasshoppers, and 2) someone (her father?) dropping off books for her to read and her being annoyed because she didn’t want help. I read this in the late 70s/early 80s, but have no idea when it was published.

324I: Weird Creature Turns Against Boy Who Spared His Life

Looking for a children’s science fiction collection. Only remember one story. It was about a boy who finds an alien or some weird creature in his room, behind a chair I think. He goes to swat it or stomp on it, but it startles him by talking to him, begging for its life. It convinces him it’s friendly. But by the end of the story, it’s clear the creature had malicious intentions; but it’s too late. And the end of the story is the creature telling the boy he should’ve killed it when he had the chance. That’s how I remember it, but I read it 30 years ago.

323X: Suspected Witch Is Really The Hexed One

I am looking for a children’s chapter book from the late 70s or early 80’s.  It was about a girl who gets sent to stay with a strange lady.  The girl thinks she is a witch, but it turns out some other lady is jealous of her and was placing spells on her.  I remember a scary scene when the girl is forced to drive the car to save her but the evil woman is in the back seat…

323I: Anthology for girls featuring Jane Austen and others

I am trying to trace an anthology that was in UK libraries in the 60’s/early 70’s, but may have been American in origin. I can’t remember the title or editor but it was aimed I think at girls and was well illustrated. One of the early stories in it was an extract from Northanger Abbey – the scene where Catherine and Isabella talk about gothic novels they are reading; a later extract has the Riding in Trains section from Laura Ingalls Wilder’s On the Shores of Silver Lake. Don’t think it was part of a set and don’t think it was a Clifton Fadiman or Louis Untermeyer anthology, as I have others of theirs, but I may be wrong. It was my first introduction to Austen and hence was significant to me. Wish there was a directory one could consult that would cross reference anthologized extracts so one could look up the Austen for instance and find all the collections in which it appears..
Hope you can help.

323D: Valley Prince Loves Mountain Princess

Elementary School book read between 1962-1967.  A Prince from a kingdom where everyone has the same color of hair, climbs a mountain to the enemy kingdom where everyone has the same, but different color hair from the Valley Kingdom people.  He meets the Mountain Princess, and falls in love with her.  Together they must overcome the prejudice against different looking people that is held by their two kingdoms. Fairytale style color illustrations with simple narrative.  I think the Prince’s hair was brown and the Princess’ hair was silver.
