353L: Victorian house with dog and dumbwaiter
Dog lives in a mysterious old Victorian style house that has a dumbwaiter, possibly has puppies to care for, and the book is for young adults, may be a chapter book with several illustrations. Art style and spirals on the ends of letters suggests mid 60s to mid 70s. I checked this book out from a library in San Diego around 1988.
348S: Siblings transform into animal shapes
I’ve been trying to figure out the title and author of this childhood ‘book memory’ my brother has for the past 3 years. If you are able to solve the mystery, it would be a “Christmas Miracle”!! 🎄
Here is the memory:
“All the illustrations were in blues and greys. It was about a boy, I think with a number of brothers, and the brothers were possibly changed into animal shapes, or possibly it was princesses changed into animal shapes. I think there was a sorceress or magician. And there were pictures of horses? And maybe dogs?”
340U: Talk Show Goes To The Dogs
This book is fiction, and could be a novel, short story, or novella, but set in the current time and real world when the book was published (sometime between 1960-1985). A famous night-time talk show (along the lines of The Tonight Show during the Carson age) hosts a segment featuring a guest who is a man with a very smart dog; the guest claims the dog can understand spoken conversation, beyond just verbal commands. There are a number of conflicts that arise; the main conflict is the sponsor of the show (a dog food company, I think) wanting to use the dog in advertising, but the dog’s owner refusing. I think it is set in Manhattan, and the book culminates in a dog fight on the ice of a pond in Central Park (between the smart dog, I think a golden retriever, and a doberman pinscher).
339T: Dog and Owner Similarities (Solved!)
I have a very fond memory of a book I had as a child where the owners of their dogs looked like their actual dogs. Example: scruffy hair, unkempt, curly hair.
302D: A pound with all different kinds of dogs
This book I am looking for is about a pound that has all different kinds of dogs in it waiting all day for their new master to come get them. As the day goes on one by one a person shows up that looks identical to one of the dogs in the pound and that dog gets to go. The book is from the perspective of one dog in particular and as every person shows up the dog says “ are you my master?” or something like that “Are you my guy?” or “is this my guy?” and each time it’s not his guy it’s another dogs guy.
And as the people show up one by one, as a kid, you KNOW what dog they are coming for because the person looks identical to the dog.
The day goes on and on and it’s finally dark, they are closing, and this one dog who is narrating is the only dog left. No one has come for him and he is all alone and very sad. Finally just as they are closed, HIS GUY, or HIS BOY, shows up and they are identical looking and the dog and the boy are overjoyed that they have found each other and he gets to go home with the boy.
It is driving me crazy that I can’t remember the name of this book or how to find it. I am 53 so it was probably written in the 1960s.
I’m not sure how to pay for this but Ill go back on the website and make sure to pay but please post this I promised my Mom that I would try to find it!!!
299F: Rebuilt Dog
The book is about a German Shepherd dog named Maximillian who is injured in a fire. He is then rebuilt using robotic/bionic parts. The author is a woman and is likely either British or German.
299D: An illustrated non-fiction book of dog breeds from the 70s or 80s
This was a perhaps slightly oversized paperback book with illustrations of different dog breeds. I believe the cover had a green border. I’ve been been poking around online to see if I could find an old copy with no luck. So far the closest thing I’ve found that’s similar are the illustrations from How Why Wonder Books Dogs Wild Animals Irving Robbin Martin Keen, 1962.
The illustrations were grouped in a certain way on the page, similar to these (but it wasn’t these books):
It’s not impossible that our paperback was a reprint of a 1960s book. There were no photographs in the book, and very little (if any) information about the care of dogs. It wasn’t very wordy. We got it at a garage sale in Michigan in the 1980s.
289D: A family of dogs (Solved)
I am looking for a children’s book that I used to read in the late 80s/early 90s at my public library in Merrick, NY. It was about a family of dogs. I believe the main character is a male dog named Sammie or Sammy. His mother dog is feeling ill, so his brother dog takes care of feeding him breakfast and getting him off to school. However, he is so used to the way his mother does everything that, when his brother tries to do things for him, he often replies that “Mommy doesn’t do it like that.”
263H: A puppy waits for the perfect owner (Solved)
Probably considered a “first reader” though might qualify as a picture book. Read to me in the late 70’s but could be as early as late 60’s. The book is about puppies in a pet store window waiting for their owners to choose them. The cover (or an illustration inside if not the cover) is a view of the pet store storefront with two windows on either side of the door. Puppies on both sides. In the book people keep coming in and choosing dogs and they all resemble the person choosing them. A take on the dogs look like their owner concept. Tall skinny people with tall skinny dogs…etc. The beagle puppy is waiting and waiting until a boy in a baseball hat (red?) comes in for him. I think the boy had previously seen the dog and had been told he had to save his money.
The illustrations might be mainly line draws and are in yellow/brown/red tones as far as I remember. My mother belonged to a book club that automatically sent books so this may have been a book club selection. It’s so frustrating to be able to remember it so clearly but not be able to find it. Hopefully someone can help!
