I can’t remember the name of the book, but I remember 2 (or more) children. Mr. ____ (their tutor I think) wears a moonstone pinkie ring, and is magical. He takes them through a secret door (covered with vines?) and down into the kingdom(?) of the goblins/gnomes(?). Goblin King defers to Mr. ____ and the children are safe. Children get bored when Mr. M___ is gone and decide to visit the goblins on their own. King is no longer friendly and captures the children. Mr. ___ shows up and demands the return of the children. Kings says, “no” because the children came w/o Mr. ___ of their own volition, so they’re “his” now. Mr. ____ is forced to humble himself to the King (even kissing his dirty feet) in order to get the children out safely. I’m pretty sure they have other magic adventures.
