I would guess from the pictures that I remember that it was very Art Deco, from the 20’s, maybe the 30’s. I used to have it when I was 5 or 6, but it was old then. My Great Grandparents gave it to me, I think. I wore it out. It was my favorite. I think it was a thin book, like a Little Golden Book, don’t know publisher. I would love to know the title, author, and if any copies are available. The pictures are what are imprinted on my mind. If I see it, I will know it.
It is about 7 princesses that are awakened each night and secretly taken to another land, by boat, to meet their princes and (I think) dance all night. I don’t remember much more.
Could there have been 12 dancing princesses instead of seven? What about this version -http://books.google.com/books/about/The_Twelve_Dancing_Princesses_and_Other.html?id=7HPdj4BcQFkC (the cover is there – use the “preview this book” link to scroll through some of the images).
Another example of the illustrations inside the book is at http://www.zazzle.com/twelve_dancing_princesses_by_nielsen_print-228464131910272913
Or this version? (Illustrations by Le Cain) http://surlalunefairytales.blogspot.com/2010/07/errol-le-cains-twelve-dancing.html
I’ve been looking for the Le Cain version without knowing the illustrator for years. Thank you!
