118A: Girl befriends mouse and fights growing alley cat

I’m seeking a children’s book I once owned, probably purchased in the late ’80’s or early 90’s, about a girl in an oldstyle London apartment who befriends a mouse.  They are both threatened by an alleycat, who grows larger and larger when the girl runs, but shrinks when she turns to face him.

I am the requester of this Stumper and can write a longer description of what I remember.

The book is a larger sized children’s book with many full-page art illustrations which were created with a metal etching process described in the back of the book. The cover is mostly white.

The mouse’s name might’ve been Pippin. Not sure about that. The little girl feeds the mouse cheese and hides the mouse from the cat in her apron pocket. As she runs down the street from the cat, the cat grows as big and tall as the several story buildings, but begins to shrink when she turns to face it, eventually scampering away down an alleyway.
