The book is about a little girl with tap shoes. At one point in the story she bakes a chicken. The book possibly has a red cover.

This might possibly be a book I am looking for too. Do you think her name was Star, and she was excited when she went to the store with her Mom to buy the patent leather tap shoes? I also remember a kind neighbor who gives her gingerbread cookies, and I read this sometime in the 80s.
If the little girl’s name was Star, and she went to buy red shoes (among other happenings), the book is probably “Betsy’s Little Star,” by Carolyn Haywood.
The story with the girl in the red shoes is the one I’m looking for too.
It is an Australian book. It uses words like “crikey” which I didn’t know when I read it back in about the year 2000. It was a library book.
The girl works in the kitchen of her master. She loves her red shoes and she dances all around in them making noise everywhere.
One day her master tells her to go to the market and buy 2 chickens and cook them because he is having a guest for dinner.
But she eats one of the chickens.
So she has a plan! She tells the master that his guest stole both chickens and is leaving. Then, She runs out and tells the guest that her master is mad because the guest stole both the chickens and he is going to give him 2 lumps by hitting him on the head with his cane.
So the guest starts leaving when the master comes out and starts to chase the guest, waving his cane, and waving “stop! I only want one! I only want one!”
The guest thinking he wants only one lump runs all the faster.
And the girl dances back inside and eats the other chicken.
Haha!
I want that book!!
Sounds like a retelling of the fairy tale “Clever Gretel.”
