I read a book in the 90s about a girl in the pioneer days who is becoming a witch or learning magic. She lives in a forest with her family and ends up having to gather herbs and set traps for animals for food. It seemed to be setting up a series. Also there was possibly a romantic element.
One possibility is Celia Rees’s Witch Child, set in colonial Massachusetts. I don’t recall it very well and don’t remember foraging and trapping but she is learning to be a witch. The premise is that possibly some of those executed for witchcraft in England and then in Salem might really have been witches.
Another one to look at is The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare.
This sounds a little bit like a book I read in the late 90’s titled “Becoming Frances”–I think the author is named Rosemary Wood.
Sorry, correction: The book I recall is “Becoming Rosemary” written by Frances Wood.
perhaps the *night calls* series by katharine eliska kimbriel? a pioneer girl named alfreda studies witchcraft, trapping, survival, quilting, etc.
