127I: Young pioneers series circa 1950’s (solved)

I remember reading a series of books during the 1950’s centering on a group of young people in pioneer America I think the author’s last name began with an A. It might have been a young adult book.

You might try looking at the books of Rebecca Caudill. (Rebecca Caudill was the pen name of Mrs. James S. Ayers.) She wrote a number of books during the 1940s, 50’s and 60s, many of which were setting during the pioneer era. One series that she wrote, set during the late 1800s, was the Happy Little Family series. Titles in the series are: Happy Little Family, Schoolhouse in the Woods, Up and Down the River, and Schoolroom in the Parlor.

Another possibility might be the books of Bess Streeter Aldrich, including A Lantern in Her Hand (first published in 1928) and its sequel, A White Bird Flying, about pioneer Abby Deal and her family. Other books set during the pioneer era include Spring Came On Forever and The Rim of the Prairie. It appears that Mrs. Aldrich’s books focused largely on the early settlers in Nebraska, while Rebecca Caudill (in my previous suggestion) wrote largely about Kentucky and the Appalachian region.

Sorry to post so many suggestions, but your request is a little vague, so it’s kind of hard to narrow it down. I’ll suggest one more: The Pioneer series by Irene Estep. I realize her name doesn’t start with the letter “A”, but it’s still fairly close to the beginning of the alphabet. If you’re trying to remember the author’s name based on where the books were shelved in the library, it might be close enough. Titles in the series include Pioneer Tenderfoot, Pioneer Buckaroo, Pioneer Sodbuster, Pioneer Engineer, and Pioneer Pilgrim.

I posted the query and have since found the solution in the “solved” site. the author was Joseph Altsheler and the series was the Young Trailers. I read the books in the 1950’s but they were written in the early 1900’s! I found the complete set of authors’ work at Amazon.com for my Kindle for $2.99!!!! Mission accomplished. thanks for your efforts.
