The book is probably from the forties and is about two little girls who are best friends and almost like twins. I distinctly remember that they wear blue checked dresses or aprons and I remember a scene involving one of their cellar doors.

Probably based on the book “Two Little Maids” aka “I Don’t Want to Play in Your Yard”
Are you sure it was P? Could it have been M? Because your summary reminds me of Milly-Molly-Mandy, by Brisley.
Yes it does have something to do with that song – or I think of them together. Yes pretty sure it is Patsy and Polly or some such. But thanks!
Your description reminds me of a book that belonged to my mother – she was born in 1922 – about two little girls who lived next door to each other named Dolly and Dottie. They had almost matching rooms but with different color schemes – one had pink and green and the other had yellow and gray (I think) I believe it was called Two Little Women by ? Carolyn Wells? I will check on this if this seems at all possibly your book.
