Three books in a series; time travelers from England arrive on bleak ocean shore, conch shell (speaking?) plays a role; more adult than Narnia; some quest of right and wrong played out; overall somewhat sad and full of loss as story unfolds.

Did it involve time travel between present day and medieval times in England? I am also looking for a series of time travel books…there were several and they were thin, soft cover with many illustrations. I also remember people in the book who were called ‘Strange Ones’ They were sinister and were aware of the time travel or something like that. There were children involved in the time travelling.
A long shot: S.C. Lewis “Out of the Silent Planet” and sequels?
Not sure about the original poster, but Natasha’s description sounds like Margaret Jean Anderson’s series – In the Keep of Time, In the Circle of Time, In the Mists of Time
