. I don’t remember much about this book but it was two children from London who were sent to stay with their Aunt in the country (Maybe Ireland??) during the end of their mother’s pregnancy I think. They were pre-teens brother and sister and they thought she was a witch but she was just eccentric. I remember they followed her out one night to see what she was up to and she was just picking mushrooms. I have been looking for this book for years. Read as a child in 1988 and I don’t think it was new then.

It only matches slightly, but could it be The Magic Summer by Noel Streatfeild? There are four children sent to live with an eccentric aunt in Ireland when their mother has to join their ill father. I don’t remember the mushroom scene, but they used to yell out to barking dogs where they were going.
oh my gosh! I think this is it. As soon as I saw the cover it looked right to me! I guess I got a few of the details wrong but I do seem to remember them yelling out to dogs where they were going?

Could it be Carrie’s War by Nina Bawden? Carrie and her brother are evacuated to Wales in the Second World War. They stay with their Auntie Lou. They get to know a housekeeper called Hepzibah Green who may be a witch.
