I remember a children’s picture book that I owned 10-15 years ago where the family lived on a school bus together in the woods (near water?). I believe the main character was a little girl. The illustrations had a lot of sunsets and there may have been some firefly collecting.
Could it have been “Boxcar Children”?. A few orphaned children found an abandoned train car in the woods and set up shelter there.
Your description reminds me strongly of one of my favorite childhood books: The Trolley Car Family by Eleanor Lowenton Clymer. The eldest child is 11 year old Sally. When the father loses his job, the family moves into a trolley car at the very end of a trolley line out in the countryside and learns to thrive in adversity. Charming story, highly recommended.
