I read this book as a child likely in early 90s. I have a very vague recollection of time traveling to different “Ages,” back and forth, possibly searching for something. I have a vivid recollection of a description of moss covered stones in a forest, possibly in England during one time travel stint, though may have been set in another world entirely. Not much to go on unfortunately!
Possibly E. Nesbit: The House of Arden.
Could it be ‘A Tale of Time City’ by Diana Wynne Jones?
It was first published in 1987
One of the protagonists is Vivian Smith, an evacuee from war time London. She is acidentally kidnapped by two friends from ‘Time City’ and the plot involves time travel, including to a future London where Nelson’s Column is just a moss-covered stone in a forest.
They are searching for ‘polarities’ which anchor Time City and allow it to exist outside normal time.

(even if this isn’t the book you are looking for, it’s very good!)
That’s it, A Tale of Time City! Had to start rereading it on Amazon to know for sure. Thanks for figuring it out!
