224B: Lion unhappy with his mane

Looking for a children’s book about a lion who either got a haircut and was unhappy with it or for some reason his mane was cut off… don’t have a title… wish I could give you more to go on.

He gets invited to a party and gets a fancy hairstyle for it, then the hostess doesn’t recognize him and won’t let him in.

Do you mean Dandelion by Don Freeman?
The lion is going to a party and goes to get his haircut, but gets his hair styled instead, but then the hostess doesn’t recognize him.

Could the patron be looking for The Lion’s Haircut by Jennifer Giddings (HB, 1969) Whitman Tell-A-Tale Book

“A lion with a shaggy mane tries to avoid getting a haircut but finds out that haircuts don’t hurt and are not so bad after all.”

Any chance it was ‘The Lion’s Haircut’ by Jennifer Giddings? It’s about a little lion who is afraid to get his hair cut, so he lets it grow and grow – until it gets so long that he can’t see and he trips over his mane when he tries to play. He can’t see where to put his fork when he eats and gets ketchup all over his nose. Finally, “He couldn’t see or hear or eat or walk. All he could do was sit. He sat while the other lions had dinner.” Finally, he lets the barber (a monkey) give him a haircut – and to his surprise, it doesn’t hurt at all and he is able to run off and play.
