Story set in England (I think). About 4 different vignettes of families living in the same house over time. Last family in the book finds items left by earlier residents.
I fee the style was sort of Allan and Janet Ahlberg-esque, both in tone and in illustrations.
Do they watch the older vignettes through a dollhouse? If so, look at Time Windows.
Possibly “Ghost of Opalina, or Nine Lives” by Peggy Bacon. A ghost cat tells the new children who have moved in all about the families and dramas that came before, dating back to the 1700s. The kids do find memorable items left behind from decades and centuries past. Absolutely magical book.
Maybe one of John S. Goodall’s picture books? The Story of a Farm, Great Days of a Country House, Lavinia’s Cottage?
I bet it’s The House on Maple Street, by Bonnie Pryor. The title finally came to me!
