I’m looking for a book I started to read in the late 70’s about a girl (maybe called Margaret) and an older boy. He writes her a letter saying that he cares for her, but will wait until she grows up. She may be in high school and he’s in college?

Could this be Trish by Margaret Maze Craig? The heroine is a shy high school girl who attracts the attention of the football star in senior year and finds herself involved with the “fast” crowd. The college guy, Jeff, is dating her boyfriend’s older sister. He takes her aside at a dance to tell her she shouldn’t try to be like the cool kids, and her boyfriend jealously accuses her of cheating and dumps her. Later she gets a long letter from the college guy in which he reiterates that she’s too good for the cool kids and he’ll be waiting for her. It was published in 1951, but I also found it in the 70s, in my school library.
