277B: Little Girl Wakes Up on the Wrong Side of the bed (Solved!)

I am searching for a children’s picture book that I had read to me as a child. I can’t recall the name of the book and after much Googling, I am still no closer to finding any results. I am 30 years old, from Australia. I have checked all databases recommend by Loganberry Books.

The storyline went as follows – A little girl woke up on ‘the wrong side of the bed’. She went about her day to day tasks only to find that everything went wrong and she felt generally irritable. Toward the end of the book she goes back to bed and literally gets out of the other side of the bed and is in a better mood. I distinctly remember that the main character was a little girl, there was a scene where she was in brushing her teeth and I think she may have worn striped PJs. This book was an older book, my best guess is 1960s based on the illustrations.

Anyway, I can tell you that the book is definitely NOT ‘Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day’ and from memory the book illustrations were blue and orange (illustrations were sort of done using a painted effect for lack of better description) only which tells me the book was most likely released published anywhere from the 1950s – early 1980s. It was not a Golden Book. I have searched on world cat and other such sites and it is NONE of the books that come up in the results. PLEASE HELP! None of the books ‘The Wrong Side of the Bed’ that I have found have been the right book. Please help me!

I don’t think will be it, but it is hard to find a description of it online so this might be useful to eliminate it from your search.
A bad day / Ruth Robins Holland (1964)
Sometimes-no one know why-a bad day happens…. Nothing goes right. The whole day seems to be made up of mishaps and frowns…. The child in the story, snuggling down in bed at the end of such a bad day, is assured of her family’s love; she realizes anyone can have a bad day, and finds that she can smile.

I may have read that book. Or my mom did. The picture in my head is of my own bed, so I think my memory is from when my mom told me I got up on the wrong side of the bed. My bed was pushed against the wall. I think I pulled the bed out, got in bed, then got up on the wall side of the bed. I’ll ponder this memory more. I’d love to know if you find it.

      Hi Rebecca

      Any luck yet?

I’m from South Africa and also remember a similar story where the character climbs out the other side of the bed which is near the wall and I seem to recall a picture with the kids face popping out under the bed.

Would love to find & read it to my own kids.

I’m looking for the same book for my mother who is 85. I believe it was published before 1950, possibly in the 30s.

“The Princess who got out of Bed the Wrong Side” by Betty Lovett, published by Museum Press, 1945?

The descriptions of the illustrations seem to be a general fit. There are a small number of copies currently for sale on ebay, one listing has various pictures of the book’s interior…

Thanks so much for the suggestion, but I checked out the eBay listing and I can confirm that it’s not the book 🙁

I’ve found something else, but it is only one short story within a compilation book. Paint-like drawings (blue and red), publishing date(s) seem to be around the right time period:

‘Language Experience Reading Program, Level 3: Follow me’ by Thorn, Elizabeth A.; [et al.] Publication date 1970 (there are earlier printings). Publisher Toronto, Gage

Pages 18-23 ‘The Wrong Side of the Bed’

I’d forgotten about the other stories but I remember some of them after viewing the book on the Internet Archive. Thank you so much. How did you do it? I’ve scoured in the internet archive and found nothing. I am beyond grateful, I could cry. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. ❤️
