Long shot, but one possibility is Margaret Buffie’s ‘Who Is Frances Rain?’/’The Haunting of Frances Rain’. Otherwise, maybe something by Beatrice Gormley or Jane Langton?

Thanks! I put that search up seven years ago and never got response. The author that would be the right age is Jane Langton, but the book was set in England, circa early 50s. But thank you for for the suggestions…those authors might be interesting anyway.
