NOT Laura Ingalls Wilder! But I think title is Little House in the Big Woods. I read this school library book repeatedly in 1960. A parent-less girl lived in a cabin in the woods and befriended animals.

I also remember reading a book like this in the sixties. It was my favourite in grade 2 and I would love to know the title. Did you grow up in Canada?
No, not Canada. Wisconsin. Rethinking it. I think the title was Little House in the Woods, not Big Woods. Green cover, as I remember. I loved that book
A bit of a long shot, but I wonder if it could be Phyllis Kelway: The House in the Woods (1939). I remember that it was a children’s book featuring woodland animals; can’t remember whether there was an orphan girl, though. It’s an English book, I think. Perhaps an even less likely possibility, but I was also thinking of Eleanor Farjeon: ‘Mrs. Malone’ (1950). It’s about an isolated person living in a wood and befriending all the animals who come to her door, but she is a old lady, not a child.
Whoah! I think it could be the first you mentioned, by Phyllis Kelway. I never had an author to put with it. I will research further. Thanks so much for your recall, and your response.
