On one page, there is a very affable, very fat uncle-type character, with his trousers rolled up, no socks or shoes on, and he’s in a stream or a mud puddle. I feel like the girl has to be patient with her uncle(s) because he/they are very scatterbrained.

I found it!! In a box deep in the attic. It is Ultra-Violet Catastrophe! or The Unexpected Walk with Great-Uncle Magnus Pringle, by Margaret Mahy, illustrated by Brian Froud. Published in 1975. You may recognize the illustrator’s name, he is one of the creative forces behind The Dark Crystal and the Labyrinth.
