I am looking for a book that really meant a lot to my sister when she was a little girl (early 60s). She doesn’t remember the title but it is about a boy who is blinded by a firecracker and then gets a seeing eye dog. Does this ring any bells?

Could this be Follow My Leader by James Garfield?
Indeed it is FOLLOW MY LEADER. Happily available in several editions on Amazon.
Yes, that definitely sounds like Follow My Leader by James Garfield. It was a Scholastic book in the 1960s and was reprinted with a different cover in 1994.
Correcting my above comment, it was originally published by Scholastic in 1957.
I was going to suggest the same. “Follow My Leader” by James Garfield.
This IS the book FOLLOW MY LEADER. The original edition was Scholastic.
I think I’m going to cry – my older brother had a copy of this book which had been passed down from our uncle’s youth. Just last week I was telling my 11YO stepson what I remembered of the plot (essentially the firecracker accident, blindness, and the dog).
This has been one of my favorite websites & communities for years. Thank you. 🙂
