I’m looking for this book for a friend of mine. He said he read it in the early to mid- 1960s; it’s a chapter book about a boy who had a mid-engine race car; maybe Mach 1 in the title? Speed Racer-esque?

Don Stanford wrote a children’s book in 1954, which was reprinted several times, called “Red Car”. The main character was Happy ‘Hap’ Adams, a 16 year old, and the car a 1948 Roadster. Not sure if it was mid-engine or not. Worth ruling out?

not sure if that is the book I’m looking for, but it sounds interesting as well! Please keep looking and is Red Car available for purchase?
It’s only slightly unreasonably priced on Ebay. Crazy money on Amazon.
Here’s an example – https://www.ebay.com/itm/204072399456
“The Red Car” is available to purchase (for copies and availability go to bookfinder.com and enter the title and author details), however it is expensive. Ebay may turn up cheaper options?
It may be read online at the Internet Archive, but to access the whole book you must become an archive member (free).
