    Is it Jean Craighead George’s Tree Castle Island or Bill Wallace’s Blackwater Swamp? Both have boys with new friends in a survival situation in a swamp…I don’t remember if the friends are Native Americans though.

      Those both look like good books but they are not the ones I am looking for this would have been written before 1980 but the swamp sounds right in the Georges tree castle book.
