234A: Boy shrinks, rides bird, drops explosive

A boy get shrunk down to a few inches tall and rides in a small compartment built for him that is strapped onto the back of a bird. He and the bird climb to a great height to drop a tiny grain of a super explosive on something. I read it as a kid and I was born in 1965. So, it was probably written before 1980, certainly before 1983.

The Fabulous Flight, written and illustrated by Robert Lawson, 1949. “Peter Peabody Pepperell, who has shrunk to a tiny size, takes off on an adventure on the back of his seagull friend Gus.” The Cold War is clearly the underlying theme. It was reprinted in 1984. Don’t know if it’s still in print. Lawson (1892-1957) was also well known for many other books he wrote or illustrated, such as Ben and Me, Rabbit Hill, and Munro Leaf’s classic, The Story of Ferdinand.
