264D: Children’s picture book about creatures in a cave

I am looking for a children’s picture book  that I am 90% sure was published before 1990. It follows a group of explorers through a cave. Page after page there are different looking creatures staring at them from behind rocks and on the stalagmites on the ceiling as they pass through the cavern. Some of the creatures sort of look like the ones from Where the Wild Things Are, or in the same spirit of Mercer mayor’s monsters. I have looked at both their respective catalogs and can’t kind a book that fits this description. I am pretty sure it is a rectangular shaped book. This one has stumped me for years and I really want to find it. Appreciate the help

I have two thoughts that are long shots, but your description of the illustrations made me think of these:
The Funny Little Woman, by Arlene Mosel. A woman falls down into a cavern where she is captured by terrible Oni (Japanese ogres). The Oni look a little like “wild tings” monsters, and there are many underground scenes. You can find reproductions of the illustrations here: http://booksforbreakfast2.blogspot.com/2011/11/funny-little-woman.html
The other guess is Mercer Meyer’s Professor Wormbog in Search for the Zipperump-a-zoo. There are a few cave scenes in this one.

ya, the Proffessor Wormbog is a good guess, but this takes place entirely through a cave and there are creatures everywhere. I think the explorers are looking for something? Anyway, thank you for the response

I was thinking THE MELLOPS GO SPELUNKING by Tomi Ungerer, but I do ?t think there are creatures lurking.

That is another good guess, but this book had more color in it than what images I can find of your book. It was fully illustrated and on every page there were different creatures in it. Thank you for the response
