288C: Family of mice take a beach vacation

I’m looking for a children’s book from the 50’s or 60’s.  I can’t remember the title.  The book is about a family of mice that ride a train to the beach for vacation.  They are dressed up like people (in clothes) for the train ride and I can see (in my mind) their little tails coming out of their clothes.  They love the sand, the beach and the creatures on the beach.

The illustrations are color but I’d say that they are pretty minimal – that is to say  – great illustrations but not a lot of extra stuff in them.

I sure hope you can locate this book.

Was this a book that had several illustrated stories about mice? There was one about going to the beach. One about a young mouse who went to see his grandmother and wore his shoes out so put on new feet. And one about looking at shapes in clouds. It was done in pastel watercolor type illustrations.

I don’t know whether the one you mention is right, but I can now EXACTLY picture the mouse putting on his new feet, so I would be interested to know what book that one is. I must have read this as a child too – though it sounds like the kind of thing that would have freaked me out when I was little!

Could this be one of The Littles books? They were little people, but had mice-like tails. I don’t know enough about the different books in the series to know if there is one where they took a train and/or went to a beach, but it sounds like something the author might have done.

What about the ‘Mary Mouse’ books – simple drawings, a landscape format, by Enid Blyton?? Many books in the series.

I have been trying to find this book also. I vividly remember several pictures from it. the mice were thin and black. The little boy mouse found a hermit crab on the beach and his mother fed him dinner – I remember the green peas on the dinner plate. The pictures were color – but quite washed out. Only certain colors were bright – like the green color of the peas.
