The book is about a girl who went to many foster homes, but was finally adopted by her teacher. I thought the title was A Happy Family, but that doesn’t seem to be it.
I came here looking for a book like this. I remember the girl stole money from a blind neighbor and kept it taped to the underside of a drawer, and she liked the Wordsworth quote “trailing clouds of glory as I come,” though she didn’t really understand it, and she went to a pharmacy and drank an egg cream, which I only remember because I had no idea what that was and it grossed me out.
I found it! I came here looking for this book but then I checked a Newbery award list because most of the books I read in elementary school were Newbery award winners. It’s The Great Gilly Hopkins.
