323G: Late Bloomer Finally Dates (Solved)

Young Adult book on library shelves in late ’60’s early ’70’s.  Has an old-fashioned feel.  Girl (first name starts with an M?) is slightly awkward, gets to date a boy she likes.  She overhears girls mocking her for wearing too much face powder.  Her yearbook quote was, “her voice was ever soft, gentle and low, an excellent thing in a woman”.  Good ending.

  1. You are looking for THAT JONES GIRL by Elizabeth Hamilton Friermood. The story line starts with World War One ending. Lizzie Lou Jones hates her name. She often daydreams of being confident, pretty and popular. When she finds out that she has a very famous actress aunt she starts doing her hair different and powdering her face. That is when she overhears the other girls making fun of her. Very good coming of age story. Copies may be hard to find.

  3. Wow! I had a thought that the boy’s name was Bill, but I wasn’t sure that I wasn’t confusing the character with another story. The face powder scene is quite unique, and I was hoping that part of the story line would help someone solve it for me. Thank you so much for your efforts! SOLVED.
