370M: Crossing the state on foot

Teenage girl somehow loses family in big city, sets off to relative’s home in another state on foot sleeping in barns, scraping together coins for food along the journey. Read in the late 60’s early 70’s school library.

Was she travelling alone? My first thought was Homecoming by Cynthia Voigt, but it’s a group of 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Their mentally ill mother abandons them, and they travel to their great-aunt’s.

This is a long shot, but this matches the beginning of The Silver Crown by Robert C. O’Brien. (Lots of other stuff happens, there are evil people tracking her, a big conspiracy is going on, etc. If your book is realism, this isn’t it.)
