321V: A Gazing Ball And Balloons (Solved)
So when I was in 6th grade (1992), I had a wonderful teacher. She pushed us to read and loved books herself. We had a project at the end of the year. I can’t remember if this description I’m about to give you is of 2 books or one. My 11 year old son is an avid reader and I’d love to find this/these books for him.
There was a gazing ball (like a mirrored one) in a garden. It was not scary, maybe some mystery but definitely not scary. Maybe a young girl.
And my other memory is of a hot air balloon. I feel like there were a lot of people on the balloon. It could have been actual balloons and not the hot air version. And I want to say they were on a huge piece of wood not a basket. I’m thinking it may have been an award winning book but I’m not for sure on that either. I have no idea if it is one book or two and this has driven me crazy for years. I’ve looked it up every way I know how.
321U: Boy Finds Christmas Tree
This story is about a boy who doesn’t have a tree on Christmas Eve. A man is driving around selling them in his truck but mom says they’re too expensive. So he sets out in the woods to cut down his own tree and ends up at a man and woman’s house where people are stealing trees off their property. One the people learn why the boy is out there and they give him a tree and bring him home via sled. I also remember him laying out Christmas lights at the beginning and someone telling him colored lights are not festive.
321T: Generous Girl Receives Beautiful New Shoes
I’m looking for a children’s book that I read as a child in 1995-1997. It’s about Christmas and it was set in an old village. There’s a girl who needs a pair of new shoes. There are beautiful ones in a cobbler’s shop. I think she learns about generosity or does something generous for someone else in the community. At the end of the book, she is gifted with the new shoes from the cobbler’s shop. I vaguely remember the plot being something along the lines of a cobbler making them for someone else but giving them to the girl instead, or maybe her brother/father save up to get these shoes.
321S: Seeking Author Of “Queer Company”
Looking for a children’s/teen book from when my mom was growing up (1955-1970ish) called Queer Company. I don’t know a lot about the story except it’s about restoring someone or something. Really looking to at least find out the author. Thanks!
321R: Girl Learns Graceful Behavior From Fairy Queen
There’s a book of fiction about a girl who lives in or near a castle- I seem to remember it won an award- I think I found it at a Scholastic book fair. This girl is somehow considered badly behaved- and she’s allowed to run wild. She is kidnapped by fairies who live in a huge underground warren (I think under a mountain) to be a servant. They’re drugged every night with the food that she discovers if she skips, she’s more alert but struggles with claustrophobia. Because of her refusal to eat the drugged food, she catches the interest of the Queen of fairies who teaches her, mostly through humiliation, how to walk and move gracefully. She’s eventually rescued and the fairies are forced into the other world, sealing their mountain.
I can’t find this book at all- My sister claims she never read it and I looked through the books at my parents house without finding it.
321Q: Girl Types As River Floods
My book is a chapter book that concerns a river flooding and a girl in the attic, typing on a typewriter. Probably the Mississippi or similar river. Probably took place in the early 1900s. Thanks for any ideas!
321P: Boys Communicate By Flashlight
2 boys, best friends, who live next door to one another, communicate with one another at or near bed time by writing messages on window shades and shining their flashlights up onto the shade. One of the boys may have been named Andrew. Early chapter book and it was a small series of books. The last one our teacher read to us, one of the boys was moving away at the end. This was read to my class in the 2nd grade (1989-1990), don’t know if it was newly published or something the teacher had been reading to her classes for some time.
321O: Kid Learns Not Everybody Is Good At Everything
Here’s the book my daughter is interested in. The book was about a little kid and all the things the member of his family were good at, and the kid tries each of those things and fails. It was all about how some people are good at certain things and that doesn’t mean you’re terrible if you’re not as good at those same things. The cover, as she recalls, had a picture of the kid with a dog balancing a bone on his nose.
