I remember reading a book in the late 60s early 70s about a boy whose father had died trying to rescue someone. His mother had remarried and he did not like his stepfather. They went on an outfitting trip together, his stepdad got hurt and he ended up solving a murder mystery.
“Our Boys”: very old book I had as a child. I estimate it was between 1880 & 1930(sorry!). It was an anthology of children’s stories & included The Little Match Girl & Hansel & Gretel. Other than that, I remember it was blue or green binding, oversized & with b&w lithograph illustrations. Thanks!
From what I remember as a ten year-old: the book was for tweens, probably published in the seventies, mid to late. It is a chapter book, contemporary, about a father and son visiting a quiet (English? New England?) village that has a secret. The people in the town are all secretive and distrustful of outsiders, but the boy strikes up a romantic friendship with a girl from the town. The mystery of the town centers around a Stonehenge-type ruin. The climax of the book involves a cyclical resetting of the people of the town and their memories.
I am looking for a book that was bought at a school book sale in Massachusetts in the mid 60’s by a ninth grader. It’s about a group of men on a desert island with poisonous spiders or crabs. One man has immunity to them and becomes the leader. A black man also develops immunity and splits loyalty in the group. At that point in the story the book was stolen from my friend and he hasn’t read another book since. Thank you for any help.

A baby is stolen and raised by pirates when they lure a boat to wreak onto shore. Later, when the boy learns his past, he escapes with a horse bought with his family’s stolen money and a small dog that was with him as a baby.
This small, illustrated children’s book features a group of kids who build various things out of a pile of wood and some nails, starting, I think, with a fort. For some reason they keep tearing down and rebuilding their constructions; at one point they have a ship with a flag on the mast. Pre-1986.
