When I was in 5th grade I read a book about some girls who stole a leprechaun’s bag of magic. I don’t remember much of the book as that was in 1979 or 1980. In the story I recall the girls (sisters) were trapped in a painting. I remember that it appeared the painting was watching you. I also remember the book going back in history as in a back story to the leprechaun and the girls. I also recall the girls being bad or evil. I really don’t remember much of the book other than it scared me like crazy! I skipped recess to read this book and read on the edge of my seat scared out of my wits. If anyone knows what this book is, I will be most grateful!!

104A: Black, Pink, and White
Just note that the book I’m searching for is definitely not “A Birthday for Frances”.
My sister and I first saw this book in our elementary school back in the mid 70’s in the midwest of Canada. It was probably an American book perhaps from the 50’s or 60’s.
It was a smallish hard back book. The most prominent aspect was that it was made up of 3 colors, black, pink (my sister thinks it was bright magenta) and white.
The premise of the book seemed to revolve around a black and white animal family (skunks?) and a birthday cake with pink candles. My sister seems to remember that the drawings were very simple using black heavy lines. One of my recollections is that the end pages had vertical black and pink stripes.
Can you help us? We are so desperate to find this book again!!
103O: Violet Pendant
I’m looking for a YA book from the late 60s or early 70s. It’s about the friendship between a teenaged boy and girl, who over the course of time become closer-boyfriend/girlfriend. He arranges to have a locket or pendant made for her fashioned like a violet, since she loves violets. Not much to go on, I’m afraid.
103N, solved: Kitten Gets into a Pickle
I am currently looking for a children’s book which is not illustrated but uses actual photos. I read the book in the late 80’s or early 90’s. The book is about an orange or brown kitten that lives on a farm. I can remember pictures of the cat running in a field of flowers, and a picture of the cat knocking over jars of flour and making a mess. The sentence that I remember most clearly was something to the effect of “Oh no, she has gotten into such a pickle” after she knocks over the flour. I had to ask my father and he told me that “pickle” also meant getting into troubled situation.
103M: Christmas at the Beach
I was looking for a series of books I read in elementary school during the mid-60’s about a young boy growing up in Australia. One book in particular dealt with celebrating Christmas at the beach and having a pudding with coins mixed in as prizes.
103L: Girl Pretends to be a Giant
This was a favorite book of mine when I was very little at the Travelers Rest, South Carolina library between 1987-1990 (age 4-7). It was a small picture book, I believe with fairly simple illustrations on white pages. The little girl pretends she is a giant (or thinks she is a giant?). She goes through various scenarios showing this. The only page I remember clearly is when she is eating trees for her broccoli.
103K, solved: The Lakota, Russell Means, and Basketball
I’m looking for a book that, when I read it, had an orange and black cover. It was about Native Americans, and I believe had a lot of information about the Lakota tribe, Russell Means, and a young Native American girl who played basketball and became a bit of a local hero. I have no idea what the book is called, but I loved it. I believe it was written by a journalist who was not Native American, and I think it came out after Last of the Mohicans, because I believe it noted that Russell Means wrote much of his own script for the movie.
103J: Boy Accidentally Helps Man Rob House (Solved)
In 1973 I read an old hardcover book containing European children’s stories. The stories were probably written in the early 1900s. In one story a boy is working for a man in a village and unknowingly helps the man rob a house; the man uses a ladder to enter the second story of the house. Someone pulls up the driveway and they flee. Days later the boy returns to the village, is forgiven, and continues to be friends with the girl who lives in the house.
103I: Miller’s Heir in Old Children’s Collection (Solved)
In 1973 I read an old hardcover book containing European children’s stories. The stories were probably written in the early 1900s. In one story a boy gets a job at a grain mill and is not accepted there. He returns later when he finds out that he has inherited the mill and they accept him with a song.
103H: Boy’s Summer in the Country Novel (Solved!)
In 1976 I read a children’s full length softcover novel about a boy who moves to the country. A girl lives nearby and she claims she can do anything as well as he can. He has a weight set and can lift the heaviest weight. She can lift it, too. They visit a man who lives on a houseboat on a nearby lake. “How deep is the lake?” he asks. “Pretty deep,” she answers. “A car went in it once.” The girl sprains her ankle and the boy helps her home.
