I read this book when I was in high school(1964-1967). It was about a boy who worked at a boat moorage/marina on Lake Okeechobee. I don’t recall it being a very thick book. I’m pretty sure it was a fiction book. I can’t seem to find it. Thanks
This book (which seemed old when my grandmother read it to me in the 1960’s) was about a little boy who had a bag of cookies that he gave away one-by-one on his walk home leaving one for himself when he arrived home. I’m confident the postman got one.
It was a young person’s book which I read when I was 10 or 12 years old in Canada. It would have been in the late 1960’s or early 1970’s when I found it in our school library. It was set in the Southern USA and I think that the period was shortly after WWII. The book was the story of a boy that was staying with a family in a big old rural home. There was something about hunting raccoons at night with dogs. I think there was actually quite a bit about the dogs and something sad happened to one of them. There was something about hearing trains running in the distance at night. There was something sad associated with this (maybe to do with the dogs?). The family had a black (I think) cook with whom the boy spent considerable time. She was rather nurturing. And a WWII vet who was rather troubled would come to the back/kitchen door and she would give him food. I think that the boy was afraid of him. My recollection is that it was a rather haunting, sentimental, sad and yet hopeful story. I think that the boy was trying to determine how he fit into the world.
From the early 1960’s, a young boy invents various devices in his home to solve mysteries. He can’t wake up, so he invents an alarm clock with string attached to his toe – alarm goes off, string winds up and tugs his toe. Does he invent a periscope to spy on a suspicious neighbor?
Name might have been Henry (perhaps with alliterative last name). Several books were published with his adventures, thin young (young?) adult fiction.
I had a book when I was a young person (10 to 12 year old maybe) in the 60’s, where there were two girls living with their respective families on either side of a river. It was written from the perspective of one of the girls, whom I think was poorer than the family on the other side, and she always looked on the other girl’s life with envy. I cannot remember the event that led to her ending up on the other side of the river and living with the other family but when this happened she was then in a position of looking across the river at her own family, missing them and realising the folly of her original yearnings. I have a feeling it may have been a Christian book – maybe Sunday school prize but I’m not certain about that. Any light shed on the name of the book would be appreciated.
PS, someone elsewhere suggested “We Live by the River” by Lois Lenski but this is not it.
This book is one of a series of books by a female illustrator (and for some reason I think she has an Asian name). They are all different stories from different cultures. The one I am searching for (and found years ago on a site from Australia when I still remembered the actual name but neglected to write it down) is a story about an East Indian Prince who listens to a parrot’s advice about a Princess. The Princess has many sisters and an overbearing father. The Prince is cast out into the wild, I think he’s beaten up by other Princes, and the parrot is there with him to give him advice. I can’t remember if the parrot is more of a trickster parrot who gets the Prince into trouble, or a helpful parrot. I think they end up together (Prince & Princess) and I don’t know what happens to the parrot. Regardless, the illustrations are simply beautiful and with crisp and clear colours belonging to the mid-century era of illustration. I believe it’s oriented landscape, about 8”x11” (or smaller, but not by much), and it’s paperback. My Mum bought it in the early 1970s Victoria, BC, Canada, but I’m not sure if she bought it used or new.
My husband (currently 62) fondly remembers a short book about a retired train engineer who was bored at home.
The engineer’s wife suggested he build a backyard railway – which he did – and the neighbourhood children flocked to it for rides and happy times.
This made the retired train engineer very happy and no longer bored.
Sorry I have nothing more to go on other than the book would have been purchased in Montreal, Quebec (in English, not in French) and it may have a
British connection as Andrew’s parents were born in England and moved to Canada in the late 1940’s.
Any assistance you can offer in helping me to locate this book would be invaluable as Andrew is an only child and both his parents have passed on.
It is a memory he speaks of often and I would dearly love to find the book for him.
This is an old (perhaps 1950’s?) children’s chapter book about a young girl living in a small Maine coastal lobster town, where her father is a lobsterman. I don’t specifically remember her mother being in the story… The main story line is that someone is stealing lobsters from traps in the town and somehow her father becomes a suspect – I think related in some way to a red sash from one of her dresses that he has in his pocket, that people think is the mask that the thieves were using. Somehow, his innocence is confirmed and I think she has something to do with it….
There are other pieces to the story as well, about her daily life, and I remember a part where she talks about listening to the rain pattering on the tin roof of their house.
Unfortunately, I do not remember any other specifics. Any help would be sincerely appreciated!
My query is on a book I read in the mid 1960’s, however I don’t know when it was published. It was a child’s book about a young student (I believe a girl) whose parents worked in a restaurant. Because of that, she “had” to bring lovely, delicious restaurant leftovers for her school lunches. I vividly remember the descriptions of her covering her desk with a checked cloth, and taking out all this elegant, gourmet food. The twist was that she was ashamed of her lunches, for being different. I hope you can help!
The book I’m searching for is one I read as a girl. It was an old book then. I was reading it in the early 1950’s.
All I recall of it was a story of a brother and sister who had to make a perilous journey by foot, crossing a mountain range somewhere in Europe. They had the help of a kindly woman who sewed coins for the trip into the darts of the sister’s dress. This was so no one would steal their money. After they left her they made it to safety on the other side of the mountains.
The book was a standard size hardback, with a faded cover, as I remember it. I borrowed it several times from my aunt, who treasured the book.
