178G: magic old stamps (solved)

When I was a kid in the 1970s, I had book of wonderful/magical tales – the one short story that I loved (and have been looking for) is about a boy who finds these old, strange postage stamps in some box in his house – they have pictures on them that depict beautiful, exotic places that he’s never heard of.
He puts one on an envelope and it gets whisked away through the air, only to return a little while later, roughed up and postmarked. He puts a stamp on a package and it too gets whisked off – only to return, appearing well-travelled and postmarked. Then he puts his old pet cat in a box and puts stamps on it – the box is whisked away to this magical land, only to return with the cat seemingly younger and rejuvenated. I think it may have ended when he sent himself off on the same journey.
I don’t recall the name of the book or this particular story – but I suspect it had “stamps” in it.

129A: Kitten wins contest when washed in bluing

This book was probably printed in the late 1960s or early ’70s and probably took place at the same time. I remember it as one of those very inexpensive quarter of a normal sized books, with a dark olive background and a fluffy white bluish cat with a pink ribbon and candy behind it.

A little girl has just started a new school or just generally goes unnoticed. I think she is extremely shy and lacks self-confidence, and her family may also have less money that the other children. I’m not sure about that. Her school is having a cat show which seems unlikely, but that’s what I remember. The owner of a nearby candy store has a litter of kittens and all of the other children rush in and claim the beautiful and lively kittens. Our main character hangs back, but the kindly store owner gives her what is obviously the runt, a bedraggled white kitten to take home. I think the girl may have named it Peppermint.

Her mother comforts her and gives it bath and adds bluing to the water. The cat turns out to be a beautiful long-haired kitten and wins first prize.

I loved the picture of the light blue cat with the pink bow around it’s neck, especially since my grandmother told me about doing the same thing to her white poodle during the Depression. You took your fun wherever you could get it back then. I’ve despaired of ever finding a copy of this book because it was in such a “throw-away” format. Thanks in advance if you can help!

103N, solved: Kitten Gets into a Pickle

I am currently looking for a children’s book which is not illustrated but uses actual photos. I read the book in the late 80’s or early 90’s. The book is about an orange or brown kitten that lives on a farm. I can remember pictures of the cat running in a field of flowers, and a picture of the cat knocking over jars of flour and making a mess. The sentence that I remember most clearly was something to the effect of “Oh no, she has gotten into such a pickle” after she knocks over the flour. I had to ask my father and he told me that “pickle” also meant getting into troubled situation.

100A: Woman Who Loves the Colour Lavender/Purple

I’ve been trying to find a book from my childhood and I’ve scoured the Internet and can’t find anything on it and was hoping you’d be able to help. It’s about a woman that loves the colour lavender/purple and I think she might be a house keeper or something in a country manor house but I’m not 100% about that fact. The only other thing I can remember is there is a section of the story where she is painting all the doors lavender and the cat knocks the paint off the shed table and walks through the paint so that there were purple paw prints all down the garden path. It is probably about 20 years old but could be older.

I know it’s not much to go on which is why I haven’t had much luck but if you have any leads I’d really appreciate it. Thanks.
