269D: Everyone wear Hats

Looking for a children’s book I read around 1983 (possible a board book, it was small in size), about a girl in a house with her family and a poltergeist that plays tricks on them. Not scary. At one point the poltergeist shuts the lights out and when they come back on “Hat, Hats, Hats, Everyone wear Hats” or something like that.

269C: Vintage Girls Skipping Rope

The book I am looking for is a hardback, large sized (slightly bigger than A4), picture book that would have belonged to my mum, so printed early 60’s maybe?  It had a pastel green cover with a picture of several girls playing, at least one of them was skipping rope.

The girls were drawn with the chubby cheeked vintage look similar to Strawberry Shortcake/Holly Hobbie.  The pictures closest to what I remember are the books by Maria Luisa illustrated by MR Batlle.  I think they wore the puffy caps similar to Strawberry Shortcake too, and maybe wore aprons over their dresses?  I seem to remember one of the girls wore glasses.

I don’t remember what the actual story was about but it may have been about going to school.  I have absolutely no idea of the title or author sorry but I would love to be able to find this book again!

Even if you had some clues about authors/illustrators that had similar style drawings I would be grateful.

267B: Myths and monsters

The book (or possibly book series) I am looking for (to the best of my memory) is a children’s collection of short stories involving myths or legends or fairy tales.  I had the book in the early 90s and it may have been an older book.  I believe some (or all) of the stories may have been foreign tales.  I remember a story with a chimera.  I also remember a story about a village and a small dragon/lizard type creature.  I think he hid in wicker baskets along the streets possibly visiting a particular two story house.  These two stories fascinated me as a child because the creatures were scary.  I believe the other stories in the book may not have had monsters like this. I seem to also remember a story about a tree. possibly the moral of this story was one bad apple spoiling the bunch, or an apple not falling far from the tree.  I seem to remember that most of these stories had a moral theme like this.  I feel like the book had an older vibe like the Brothers Grimm or Hans Christian Anderson.  There may have been pictures but the book was mostly words.  Please let me know if i can provide any further detail. I don’t remember the name of the book but i seem to think it may have had the word MYTH in the title.  I really hope you can help!!

266G: Color-based ABC books

I am trying to find a children’s book probably printed in the 70s or 80s.

It was to teach children about colors. Each page featured a different color (I remember there were pages for Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Pink, Brown, Black, and White). On each page the name of the color would be printed in that color, and there were various objects of that color illustrated (for example the Red page would have had an apple, a red barn, a cardinal bird, etc). Each page might have had ten or so illustrations on it.  The non-primary-colored pages of this book (orange, grey, pink) had a small illustration to show how they made those colors by combining others. The illustrations were circles…red circle + white circle = PINK, red circle + yellow circle = orange, etc.

I am having a great deal of trouble remembering the exact illustrations, but I’m trying. I think that (among other things) the Yellow page had buttercups and a canary, Blue page had bluebells, Pink had a rose, White page had baby’s breath and maybe a jug of milk, Black page had some sort of berry(?)

The art style definitely had a vintage look to it, like so:

266F: Collection of Fairy Tale Stories From Childhood

My mom bought me a hardback collection of fairy tale stories in December of 1996, 1997, or 1998. She remembers purchasing it from Barnes and Noble, and recall it was a special holiday edition. I do not know the title, though I think I vaguely remember the worlds “Once Upon a Time” on the cover. I remember that the cover was a royal blue, and I think there was a picture of a castle/kingdom centered on the front. I think the book was almost square in shape. The pages were gold, that was one of my favorite things. I remember a couple stories from it, the Princess and the Pea I remember distinctively, and I know there was one about a man stealing herbs from a witch’s garden because they would heal his wife’s illness, but they made a deal to give the witch their first born child, so maybe this is a Brother’s Grimm book? I know there are a lot of stories I think may be in there, but those are the two I remember very well, so I don’t want to accidentally give a story that is not there.

It was such a beautiful book, and all I want is to find it and have it for my children to enjoy as well.
