Pearl of a Present

The PearlToday in our Lost in a Good Book series, we present a pearl, or rather, The Pearl by John Steinbeck (1947), with a charming little gift tag.

The front of the card reads, “for Pat my nice friend.  Helen.”

The reverse of the card reads:

Greetings“Pat this [is] not a guild book
I ordered it especially for you
supposed to be so different
I hope you like – also a
first edition
Helen”

And the inscription on the first free endpaper also reads, “From Helen Jacobs. Christmas 1947.”  Yup, it is indeed a first edition.  Nice gift, Helen!

Stump the Bookseller, BETA format

lb-kidchairs-sWe are pleased to present the new BETA model for Stump the Bookseller.  We’re still working out some kinks, but the basic format is now in WordPress (like this blog), which should make commenting simple and faster, and spam-free.  It also has an awesome search capability, which we know you’ll enjoy.

We decided the old keycodes were unnecessary in this new format, and we hope this makes the site more intuitive to use.  The old Stump the Bookseller site remains live, too, so you can still benefit from the 18-year archive of Solved Mysteries.  In fact, we encourage you to do as much of your own homework as you can, using our archives, Google, the Library of Congress, etc., which are all free.  Posting to the new site will be a mere $4, and we hope you’ll provide us some concrete details so that your query can be solved!

Welcome back, Stumper Magicians worldwide, and please let us know what we can do to tweak this BETA model to make it even better.  We’ve missed you!

Sandwich Board

sidewalk-signWe’ve wanted to have a sandwich board for over a decade, but the number of options and choices seemed boundless and no one agreed.  I finally ended the dormant debate by simply buying one, and putting it to use.  So, to inaugurate the sign, it boasts a sale on art books this weekend.  And the sign is purple.  What were we debating about?

Wednesday Work-a-day

What do we do all day in the bookstore?  Here’s a snapshot.

Today, we have a new online ordering system with our main book distributor, Baker & Taylor.  Title Source 3 has been retired, and Title Source 360 replaces it.  This doesn’t affect our customers lives in the slightest, but it’s new territory for us.  So far, so good, but it’s still so very new.  And it will affect our future as we grapple with a new inventory/POS system, but that’s another story.

We’re also getting ready for our Valentine’s Night tomorrow.  Bought some carnations, some chocolate, posted to Facebook and Twitter, sent out an email to our newsletter subscribers.  Tomorrow we’ll rearrange the room into an intimate cabaret and welcome the musicians.

On the tech end of things, Stump the Bookseller has been down for too long, but we’re working hard on it behind the scenes.  After much discussion, we’ve decided to format it as a WordPress blog (like this one), which should make posting and commenting easier.  But there’s lots of initial set-up to do, and we’re working on that now.  Go, Quinn!

And in the long-term planning category, the Larchmere Festival really isn’t that far away.  So we’re starting our planning meetings with other merchants and residents to organize the annual Larchmere Festival on the first Saturday in July.  Hard to plan for hot weather when it’s still so cold.

Meanwhile, the Valentine cards are selling like crazy, we sold a nice Wizard of Oz book, and customers are asking us questions and sending us hunting as usual.  What do you do all day?

The Paris Wife

Paris-WifeJust a quick kudos to my friend Paula McLain.  The paperback version of The Paris Wife has been number one on the Indie Bound bestseller list for three weeks now, and it is currently number five on The New York Times list!  I well remember her working so hard on this book, wanting to make it a compelling, beautifully written story.   She did it!  Whoo Hoo!

Loganberry Books has it in stock, of course!  If you haven’t read it yet, it’s about time you did.

Frances and Bernard

aba-bauer

Frances and Bernard by Carlene Bauer is a wonderfully written novel told through the correspondence between the title characters. The format that Bauer uses, revealing the lives of Frances and Bernard through letters, gives them a depth that allows these characters to really come off the page. The novel gives a feeling of having a glimpse into the lives of two very real people instead of fictional characters.

The reader gets to experience the blossoming romance between Frances and Bernard, as they struggle with the tribulations of life with questions of faith and literature painting their personal views. Considering both of them are writers, Frances a novelist and Bernard a poet, who met at a writer’s colony the literary references set off a chain reaction for any reader:  adding classic authors to the to-read list, such as Kierkegaard and John Donne. Frances and Bernard is a hard book to put down.  Bauer certainly delivers, presenting a novel that is simultaneously believable and beautiful.

ALA TV Day

It’s a big day, folks!

For me, it stawkyc-2013-01-28rted at 4am.  I can’t believe people get up this early on a regular basis, but, hey, some people have jobs that start early!  For Joe and Derek, and their guests, that means 4am.  Derek was in his multi-media van with the camera running when I arrived at the shop.  He was livestreaming shots of the icy Larchmere morning to WKYC Channel 3.  Joe arrived shortly afterward to get his first tour of Loganberry.  Over the next 3 hours, Derek video recorded 5 short segments from Loganberry, 3 including yours truly, and 1 including Otis.  Always nice to have a little media attention to your small biz, and we appreciate the effort of the early-morning team!

caldecott-75-sOur multi-media day is just beginning.  At 11am we will live webcast the ALA Youth Media Awards from Seattle WA, featuring Kent State’s Carolyn Brodie as the emcee of the event.  We all have our favorites, mock ballots will be collected, and we expect to be surprised.  We are every year!

Cheese Cookies (savory)

By popular demand, here is the recipe for “cheese cookies” straight from my grandmother’s recipe box.

Cheese Cookies (Mabel Anderson)
2 sticks (1/2 lb) soft butter
1/2 lb sharp cheddar cheese grated – room temp
2 c. sifted all purpose flour
1/2 teas salt (optional)
2 c. rice krispies
paprika (optional)

Roll into balls (flour hands) and press flat with fork. Bake 400 for 12-15 min. Serve warm or cold. May be kept in refrigerator indefinitely.

Notes: I use salted butter so I skip the extra salt. I never met Mabel Anderson, but her cookies are to die for!

Larchmere Mural Dedication

Mural

We are very excited about the new Larchmere Mural that graces the east wall of Loganberry Books.  It is of course about books.  And community.  After all, the book list was created by soliciting nominations from the neighborhood.  As such, it’s a quirky and diverse list.  Come to the Dedication Ceremony tomorrow at 4:30 to learn more about the community input process, the fabrication and installation of the 12′ panels, and the books selected.
