I am looking for a book that I read in the 90’s.. with or 11th grade English. It’s about an adolescent male who looses the friend. The friend may have died as a result of falling out of a tree OR…. The main character goes to the tree while processing his grief. OR. There is a picture of a boy on the cover… sitting at the base of the tree. There is also a sort of soliloquy… where he talk about the death.
I’ve been wondering about this book for years and the name isn’t even remotely close to the tip of my tongue.
A Separate Peace? Not from the ’90’s, but typically used in lit classes.
Not written in the 90s but you could have read it then, I think this is John Knowles’ A SEPARATE PEACE

A Separate Peace by John Knowles?
Formerly frequently read in high school is John Knowles’s Separate Peace, in which the boy’s friend dies by falling out of a tree (IIRC). There’s Richard Peck’s Remembering the Good Times, in which a boy hangs himself from a tree (also IIRC).
A common high school book read by high school English classes about a boy falling out of a tree is A Separate Peace by John Knowles. Many cover versions show a boy under a tree.
I’m sure I’m joining a long list of people who remember “A Separate Peace” by John Knowles.
Could this possibly be Katherine Paterson: Bridge to Terebithia? The protagonist’s friend doesn’t fall out of a tree, but is drowned after falling into a creek ; but some of the other details seem to fit, and there is a picture of the boy near a tree on the cover.
