379I:  Nefertiti with Glasses (Solved!)

I’m searching for a teen/YA mystery novel from the 1960’s or perhaps the late 1950’s set on a college campus. Two students, along with their archeology professor, try to solve a mystery of a missing artifact. The one detail I distinctly recall is the male student nicknames the female student Nefertiti with glasses. As a very awkward fourteen year old with glasses, that stuck with me, leading me to believe there was hope yet for me! I’m sorry my description is sketchy after 60 years, but I do remember enjoying the story and would love to re-read it once again.

Tru this: The Mystery if the False Fingertips, by James Holding.

. “Her violet eyes w^ere alert behind horn-rimmed glasses. She laughingly explained the glasses were essential because she was 20-20-20 — that is, she had twenty- twenty vision up to twenty inches. Beyond that, she couldn’t tell her friends from her enemies, she said. Yet her spectacles gave her vivacious face a studious cast that added to her appeal. At least Dutch thought so. He described Janet as “Nefertiti with glasses,” which pleased Janet greatly when she found out who Nefertiti was and saw from pictures of the famous Egyptian queen how truly beautiful she had been.”

Whoa! Got it in one. That’s it! The title is not ringing any bells, but the quote from the book is sure clanging away. There are plenty of copies out there and I will be ordering one. There are so many books, mostly mysteries, that I’ve read over the years where I can recall the basics of the story but not the title. Kind of like songs – I love the tune but can’t remember the name of the band!

Thank you so much, MamaSquirrel, you made my day.
